In carrying out capital works to fulfil this vision, the Harbour Trust has consulted extensively with the community and endeavoured to preserve the heritage value of this former torpedo factory, submarine base and gasworks situated in Cammeraygal Country.
In 2005, the Commonwealth Government transferred the site to the Harbour Trust for the purpose of revitalising it as a public park. Due to signification site contamination – a holdover from the period when it served first as a gasworks and later as a Defence base – extensive remediation work was carried out by the Harbour Trust between April 2010 and April 2016. The Harbour Trust subsequently adopted a Management Plan (See: Planning Framework) to guide the revitalisation of the site, which was christened Sub Base Platypus in August 2017.
In May 2018, following the completion of a shaded BBQ area, a playground and an over-water walkway linking Sub Base Platypus to Kesterton Park, the site was opened to the public for the first time in 150 years.
Current construction works include refurbishments to Building 2 (Submarine School) and Building 10 (Fleet Workshops) to allow for their adaptive reuse by future tenants. Also under construction is an open courtyard, which will connect the upper car park, mixed commercial use spaces and the over-water walkway to Kesterton Park.
